Nearly 1,000 students, faculty and staff are participating this month in 31 programs around the globe.

With the start of ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ’s Winter Term, nearly 1,000 students, faculty and staff are traveling to locations on six continents to participate in unique programs that cater to a variety of interests across multiple disciplines.
ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ is renowned for its emphasis on global engagement, and Winter Term is the busiest time of the year for this critical element of an ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ education. During this year's Winter Term, which spans the month of January, 849 undergraduate and graduate students will participate in intensive programs through ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ's Study Abroad and Study USA programs, cohort travel and course-embedded travel.
To support students on these programs, ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ has awarded more than $117,000 through the and endowed gifts. Through these initiatives established to support the university’s commitment to diversity and global engagement, ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ is able to offer financial aid for global engagement to every student with documented financial need.
Unique to ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ is the preparation students receive for their Winter Term programs. Most Study Abroad and Study USA courses require a one-credit course in the preceding fall semester, where students meet with their faculty members and classmates as they learn in advance about the locations and cultures they plan to visit. The classes allow professors to forge strong relationships with their students and give students an avenue to learn about each other prior to their immersion in new and dynamic places.
This will be the first year GEC launches a program which begins in the United States and travels abroad. The ESPN: From Bristol to Beyond course will travel to Argentina in 2019. This course was created by Professor Dave Bockino with the intention of going to a different location abroad in the future. The program will continue to begin in Bristol, Connecticut, which is the headquarters of ESPN. This year the program will connect with Argentinian athletes and sportscasters. This interaction creates a compelling professional networking opportunity for ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ students.

The Global Education Center will announce all 2019-20 short-term programs in March and will kick off the application period for Winter Term 2020 Study Abroad and Study USA programs later that month.
These programs, in addition to a wide offering of ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Centers Abroad, affiliate and exchange programs, and Study USA Centers contribute toward ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ’s goal of achieving 100 percent access to global engagement. As a result, by the Institute of International Education, with 1,654 ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ students studying abroad during the 2016-17 academic year.
