Faculty and staff honored at annual luncheon

Four ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ employees were recognized for superior scholarship, teaching, mentoring and service at the annual faculty-staff awards luncheon on May 13, 2009. Laura Roselle, Connie Book, Glenda Crawford and Keith Dimont were each selected for one of the highest accolades bestowed each year on faculty and staff.

Tripp York, an instructor of religious studies at ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ, explores the lives of Christian anarchists who attempted to address materialism, racism and militarism in Living on Hope While Living in Babylon: The Christian Anarchists of the 20th Century, published this month by Wipf & Stock and York’s third book since 2007.
ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ Academy announces third class of scholars

Twenty-nine rising sophomores from the Alamance-Burlington School System have been selected to join the third class of scholars in the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ Academy, an enrichment program for academically talented students, on the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ campus.

ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ senior Kelly Erin McCarty has been named the recipient of a DACOR Bacon House Foundation fellowship for graduate study in international affairs, an award of up to $10,000 that will assist her this fall as she begins work toward a graduate degree related to human rights and social justice.

Thirteen rising juniors at ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ have been named recipients of the 2009 Lumen Prize, the university’s premier award that comes with a $15,000 scholarship to support and celebrate their academic achievements and research proposals.

The ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ Board of Trustees inducted new member C. Ashton Newhall at its spring meeting, which was held April 17-18 on campus. Newhall is a 1998 ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ alumnus and co-founder of Montagu Newhall Associates, a venture capital firm headquartered in Owings Mills, Md.

North and South Carolinians believe that the United States is on the wrong track but generally approve of President Barack Obama’s performance during his first 100 days in office, according to the latest ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ Poll. In particular, Carolinians are divided on the way Obama is handling the economy.
Alumni Jay and Amy Hendrickson receive 2009 SoCon Distinguished Service Awards
