Lee Rainie, director of Ƶ’s Imagining the Digital Future Center, provided insight for a Sept. 23 Washington Sun newsletter examining President Donald Trump’s push to use the term “super intelligence,” or “SI,” instead of artificial intelligence.
The newsletter, “Skynet, Rebranded,” explores whether changing the terminology surrounding AI could influence public perceptions of the technology amid concerns about its societal impact. Rainie questioned whether distinctions among terms such as artificial intelligence, artificial general intelligence and artificial super intelligence resonate with the public.
“My sense is that adding a word in front of AI, whether it is general intelligence or super intelligence, isn’t a distinction that matters to the public,” Rainie told The Washington Sun. “Experts cannot agree on what the definition of artificial general intelligence is or the definition of artificial super intelligence. Asking people to sort these differences out isn’t a very reasonable thing to do.”
