Commenting on a U.S. magistrate decision that a high school student who posted critical comments about her teacher on Facebook is protected under the First Amendment, ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Law professor Scott Gaylord explained in news interviews that schools were working to find a balance between protecting free speech and preventing speech that is threatening or inciting dangerous behavior.

In a February 2 presentation titled, "Time to Move On -The New Normal in Legal Employment," John Lassiter, CEO and President of Carolina Legal Staffing, shared insights into the legal employment market with ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Law students.

ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ School of Law was represented recently at the United Kingdom's Center for Legal Education Learning in Law Annual Conference held at the University of Warwick in Coventry, UK, by ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Law professors Steve Friedland and Bonnie McAlister, and by instructional technologist Christie Dickerman.

On February 4, James B. Leonard, former Deputy Assistant Secretary for Textiles, Apparel and Consumer Goods in the U. S. Department of Commerce, from 2002-2006, spoke to ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Law students about the accession of China to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the requirements demanded by the United States in those negotiations.

In the Spring 2009 edition of the John Marshall Journal of Computer and Information Law, ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Law's Catherine Dunham, professor and associate dean for academic affairs, and Steve Friedland, professor and director of ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Law's Center for Engaged Learning in the Law, co-authored "Portable Learning for the 21st Century Law School: Designing a New Pedagogy for the Modern Global Context."

Hasina I. Lewis, a member of the Class of 2012 at ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Law, published an article entitled "Cultivating Diversity in the Law School Classroom," featured in the January edition of the Law Student Division Bulletin of the North Carolina Bar Association.

ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Law will open on a two-hour delay today (Friday, Feb. 5), due to icy conditions.

Tom and Karen Armstrong, longtime supporters of ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ's study abroad and service learning programs, recently contributed gifts in support of the law school's Wills Clinic and its veterans scholarship fund.

Franklin McCain, one of the NC A&T students who energized the civil rights movement in 1960 by sitting at a segregated lunch counter in Greensboro, N.C., was the featured speaker at ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Law's second annual Martin Luther King, Jr. forum on January 14.

Due to continued icy roads and the aftermath of the weekend snowstorm, ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ School of Law will close at 9 p.m. on Monday, February 1, and will open at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, February 2.
