Students without cars on campus will find it much easier to volunteer this fall. The Kernodle Center for Service Learning is sponsoring Get on the Bus!, a weekly Friday afternoon service trip featuring transportation by ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ BioBus.

The Kernodle Center for Service Learning launched a new program Friday to help students explore volunteer opportunities available to them in Alamance County and surrounding areas. The “Get on the Bus” kick-off in the Moseley Center featured a ribbon cutting by ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ President Leo M. Lambert.

Tammy Cobb, assistant director for community partnerships at ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ, is one of 24 local volunteers serving as leaders of the 2009 United Way campaign in Alamance County.

The Kernodle Center for Service-Learning has launched its redesigned Web site to benefit students, faculty, staff and community partners participating in ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ's award-winning civic engagement programs.

Andi Cochran wanted to spend her final months before college investing in a worthwhile project, so when the incoming ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ freshman used her high school graduation money to buy toys for patients at Duke Children’s Hospital, she knew her actions represented more than a gift – they were a “thank you” to an institution that touched her own life.

Mary Leigh Frier and Rebekkah Goodman-Williams have joined the Kernodle Center for Service Learning staff in the positions of associate director and North Carolina Campus Compact VISTA, respectively.

The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars selected ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ to be one of five recipients of its inaugural Higher Education Civic Engagement Award in June. President Leo M. Lambert will accept the award on ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ’s behalf at a Washington Center gala in October.

Professors and staff from universities across North America will be meeting over the next two years to participate in an ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ-sponsored seminar to develop and research methods for teaching students how to think in ways appropriate to democratic societies.
