Twelve incoming freshmen arrived this week for ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ's annual Pre-Serve program to give back to the local community before they begin classes in the fall.

Courtney Graham and Alex Moss graduated from ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ this month having made a lasting contribution to their community while studying at ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ. The duo are the first two alumni of ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ’s Civic Engagement Scholar program, which was designed for students looking to make a positive change by partnering with local organizations in need of assistance.

Running a lemonade stand can be the first step toward a business career, as hundreds of children will discover Saturday when they set up shop across Alamance County as part of the national ‘Lemonade Day’ project. For Tim Porter, however, Lemonade Day means so much more, and the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ senior believes what kids have already learned through his efforts will stay with them forever.

Three of North Carolina’s most influential voices in higher education gathered Wednesday, Feb. 9, for a panel discussion at a civic engagement conference on ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ’s campus. Their message was simple: state and federal lawmakers should preserve financial aid for students in the ongoing recession, and to stay competitive in a global economy, schools must widen access for those who want to pursue college degrees.

ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ students, faculty and staff helped clear debris, trees and other material during an April 30 tornado clean-up service trip to Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C.

ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ junior Amber Mathis has received a Newman Civic Fellows Award from Campus Compact, a national organization that aims to improve community life and to educate college students on civic and social responsibility. She is one of 135 students from 30 states to receive the award.

Students and staff from ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ gathered May 1 in Graham, N.C., for the dedication of the 20th Habitat for Humanity home built by ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ volunteers since the international nonprofit program first established a chapter at the university in 1989.
