ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ services and programs in downtown Burlington, N.C., have boosted the local economy over the past three years by an estimated $8.1 million, earning an award this month from the North Carolina Department of Commerce.

Leaders of a student organization that fights hunger in Alamance County invited ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ President Leo M. Lambert and his wife, Laurie, to prepare meals with them this month as they celebrated a $5,000 grant to expand their impact across the region.

The Alternative Breaks Program in the Kernodle Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement offered the late January experience to introduce students to issues around hunger and homelessness in the nation’s capital.

The donation program intended to give back to student groups and university initiatives has assisted Stop Hunger Now, Habitat for Humanity, Kernodle Center programming, the "It Gets Better" initiative and the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Academy.

ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ and the (Burlington, N.C.) Times-News will hold an expert panel on the future of the community in an “Alamance County: 2030” program on Feb. 4 from 7-8:15 p.m. in McKinnon Hall of the Moseley Center.
