乱伦视频鈥檚 Class of 2029 arrives on campus ready for new connections and opportunities /u/news/2025/08/22/elons-class-of-2029-arrives-on-campus-ready-for-new-connections-and-opportunities/ Fri, 22 Aug 2025 18:47:43 +0000 /u/news/?p=1025395

Screams of joy rang through a residence hall Friday, Aug. 22 as Samantha Probst 鈥29, her roommate Leah Rappaport 鈥29 and Jonas Hinsdale 鈥29 came together in a big hug 鈥 Probst telling Hinsdale he鈥檚 the reason she and Rappaport are now roommates.

Samantha Probst 鈥29, her roommate Leah Rappaport 鈥29 and Jonas Hinsdale 鈥29 greet each other during Move-In Day on Aug. 22, 2025.

鈥淛onas is one of my best friends from home,鈥 said Rappaport, who is from Westchester, New York. 鈥淚 knew I wanted to room with somebody who is also interested in the theatre field, and I said, 鈥楯onas, do you know anyone in your major who I could room with?鈥 and he was like, 鈥楢ctually, this girl Sam is perfect.鈥

Hinsdale connected the two young women, and they clicked immediately.

鈥淔rom our first conversation, I just knew she was the one,鈥 said Probst, who is a Vocal Scholar from Redondo Beach, California. 鈥淪he is just so joyful and made me so excited to move to campus and live with her.鈥

Samantha Probst ’29 and her parents John and Christie P’29 put together her room during Move-In Day on Aug. 22, 2025.

Achieve your dreams

Now all three students are members of 乱伦视频鈥檚 Class of 2029, who moved to campus on Aug. 22, coming from 43 states and 15 countries, including Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Panama.

The three first-year students are also part of the Performing Arts Living Learning Community (LLC), one of the more than a dozen LLCs at 乱伦视频 where students live in the same residential area, interacting academically and socially with each other and with faculty that share the same passion, interest, or academic focus.

鈥淲hen we found out we were living on the same floor, we were so excited,鈥 said Hinsdale, who will be majoring in music theatre. 鈥淚鈥檓 so excited for our next four years together, and we鈥檙e going to have a blast because we鈥檙e already such good friends.鈥

All three students chose 乱伦视频 for the performing arts, with the university recently ranked #4 鈥淏est College Theatre鈥 by the Princeton Review and named one of the 鈥25 Best Drama Schools of 2025鈥 by The Hollywood Reporter.

鈥淚 knew about the alumni and its reputation and specifically the small class sizes, and the opportunities that came with it,鈥 said Probst, who will major in music theatre. 鈥淏ut then, when I did more digging and research on the school itself, I realized how many opportunities there are with study abroad and having a double major or minor.鈥

Probst’s parents, Christie and John Probst P鈥29, say they will be sad to see her leave home but know she will thrive at 乱伦视频.

鈥淪he’s such a sweet, good kid, and we’ve thoroughly enjoyed having her home, but we’re also really excited for her to take the next step, and we know that 乱伦视频’s going to be a great place for her to do that and grow as a person and excel and hopefully achieve all of her dreams,鈥 said John.

No place like 乱伦视频

As the university welcomes more than 1,500 new students for the 2025-26 academic year, 乱伦视频 will now have representation from all 50 U.S. states, but some students like Praise Ogundeji 鈥29 are not coming from far away. She moved to 乱伦视频 on Friday from Greensboro, North Carolina, and says, after her first tour at the university, she didn鈥檛 want to go anywhere else.

鈥淢y tour guide was an eye-opener, she just made me fall in love with the school,鈥 said Ogundeji, who plans to major in international business.

Ogundeji is part of the African Diaspora LLC, which is open to students of all academic interests and racial/ethnic backgrounds. It is the perfect fit for students interested in the expansive, global and interconnected nature of the lived experiences of those who have ancestral ties to Africa.

鈥淭he whole experience is exciting to me,鈥 said Ogundeji. 鈥淒ecorating my dorm, meeting new people and our activities here.鈥

乱伦视频 requires students to live on campus for the first two years of school with first-year students living in one of five residential neighborhoods: Colonnades Neighborhood, Danieley Neighborhood, East Neighborhood, Global Neighborhood and Historic Neighborhood.

Various 乱伦视频 student organizations assist with the Move-In Day process on Aug. 22, 2025.

The roommate connection

Isabelle Drake 鈥29 and her roommate, Kylie Mazzei 鈥29 connected online before coming to 乱伦视频, bonding over the color theme of a future room in the Historic Neighborhood.

鈥淲e both said blue and white, so I think that was a big green flag,鈥 said Drake, who is from Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and is a Change Maker Scholar.

Before Move-In Day, Drake visited Mazzei in her hometown of Essex Fells, New Jersey, where they attended a concert together and were able to bond.

鈥淲e hit it off. It was a good connection,鈥 said Mazzei, who plans to study elementary and special education.

Drake is planning to study in the School of Communications,聽exploring fields in broadcast meteorology or sports reporting. She was drawn to the university for the study abroad opportunities and 乱伦视频鈥檚 unique Winter Term in January. Julie Drake P鈥29, Isabelle鈥檚 mother, praised the Move-In Day process and is excited for her daughter, her first child leaving for college.

鈥淚t looks like the entire community is out. I鈥檓 impressed. They really have pulled all the stops out,鈥 said Julie, about Move-In Day. 鈥淚t鈥檚 been a whirlwind. It鈥檚 an exciting time for her. It鈥檚 definitely going to be difficult for us at home, and we鈥檒l definitely miss her. But we have high hopes. It鈥檚 going to be an awesome year.鈥

Julie says the college selection and touring process was almost like 鈥渁 full-time job,鈥 but after touring 乱伦视频, she knew it was the right place for her daughter.

鈥淲e toured a very large university, and I remember they said, 鈥業f you go three blocks that way, you鈥檒l find that鈥 and 鈥極h, and there鈥檚 a transit bus, you鈥檒l want to use that.鈥 I just felt so overwhelmed, and I was just thinking, 鈥業鈥檓 not sure this is the right fit for Isabelle,鈥欌 said Julie. 鈥淎nd then we came here, everything is walkable, and it鈥檚 beautiful. On the tour, I feel like the tour guide was hugging every third person. You could tell it was a close-knit community.鈥

Roommates Alessio Vaccaro 鈥29 and Will Saratella 鈥29 prepare their room during Move-In Day on Aug. 22, 2025.

While Drake and Mazzei didn鈥檛 know each other before 乱伦视频, roommates Alessio Vaccaro 鈥29 and Will Saratella 鈥29 went to high school together in Needham, Massachusetts.

鈥淚 committed to 乱伦视频 and Will was thinking about it, and I was trying to get him to commit,鈥 said Vaccaro, who plans to study finance. 鈥淚鈥檓 most excited about meeting new people and getting into classes and seeing what it鈥檚 like. It will be a cool, new change-up from high school.鈥

And as students began to unpack their rooms and say goodbye to family, they are reflecting on their new home and their decision to attend 乱伦视频.

鈥淚 really wanted that one-on-one personalized experience, and I knew that I would only get that at 乱伦视频,” said Probst. “It just seemed to check off every box at the end. It was just the perfect fit, and I made the perfect choice.鈥

This year鈥檚 judge, Martin Mitchell, who works at the Library of Congress and former editor of Poetry Daily, praised Moreau鈥檚 work:

鈥淭he scale of Claudine R. Moreau鈥檚 “Demise of Pangaea” is huge,” he said. “We range from the granular 鈥榢eyed-in code鈥 of our cells, to lovemaking and childbirth, all the way to the eventual extinction of our galaxy, with its 鈥榮piral-armed bones鈥 descending towards Earth. Moreau beautifully renders humanity鈥檚 physical and emotional 鈥榝ossil record.鈥 A surprising and inventive work.鈥

Celestial mechanics on display as 乱伦视频 hosts lunar eclipse viewing event /u/news/2025/03/17/celestial-mechanics-on-display-as-elon-hosts-lunar-eclipse-viewing-event/ Mon, 17 Mar 2025 14:00:16 +0000 /u/news/?p=1009707 Around 120 乱伦视频 students, faculty, and staff gathered under the star-strewn sky on the Young Commons lawn in front of Moseley Center at 1 a.m. on Friday, March 14 to witness a breathtaking total lunar eclipse鈥攁 celestial event where the Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow across the lunar surface.

Photo of the moon in totality
The Moon in totality taken at 2:46 a.m. by 乱伦视频 Astronomy Club member Sam Lindo using a Seestar S50 telescope.

Historic Neighborhood Faculty Director, Claudine Moreau, collaborated with the 乱伦视频 Astronomy Club to host the late-night viewing party, complete with hot cocoa and Moon Pies鈥攁 playful nod to the moon’s temporary plunge into darkness on 鈥淧i Day.鈥 Sarah Ann Chapman, associate director of Residence Life for residential education and community development, also joined the moon-gazing festivities, handing out cocoa to attendees.

The Astronomy Club showcased an array of telescopes, offering attendees the chance to observe the eclipse up close and capture their own images through the eyepiece. Adding to the scientific intrigue, Tim Martin, an adjunct professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, set up advanced telescope-imaging systems鈥攑art of a decade-long project aimed at meticulously photographing lunar eclipses that outline Earth鈥檚 full umbral shadow.

The crowd settled onto blankets and adirondack chairs on the grass, buzzing with anticipation as the moon entered totality at 2:26 a.m.. During this phase, the moon adopted a striking dark red hue鈥攁 result of Rayleigh scattering, where shorter wavelengths of sunlight scatter in Earth鈥檚 atmosphere, allowing only the longer, red wavelengths to bend around the planet and illuminate the lunar surface.

For those who missed this awe-inspiring event, the next total lunar eclipse visible from 乱伦视频 is already on the horizon, March 2026, but the eclipse will only be visible for a short time at moon set.

The event, organized by Historic Neighborhood Faculty Director Claudine Moreau and Faculty in Residence Kevin Otos, kicked off with an engaging mini-lesson on the fascinating world of fungi.

Armed with new knowledge, students set off to explore the campus grounds in front of the Carlton building, scouring the area for different types of mushrooms. After a short search, they reconvened to display their finds. Izzo organized the collection by appearance and color, explaining the important ecological roles mushrooms play in their habitats.

To keep the adventure going, Izzo encouraged students to widen their search perimeter and use the iNaturalist app to document their finds. The second round of mushroom discoveries popped with a vibrant array of colors 鈥 thanks to the聽recent rainfall that boosted the fungal growth on campus.

It was a fun and educational experience, leaving students with a deeper appreciation for the hidden world of fungi thriving around them. Historic Neighborhood plans to make this event an annual fall tradition.
