A weekend winter storm resulted in operational changes to the university on Monday, Jan. 26. Those changes and any others as a result of the storm have been, and will be, communicated through daily afternoon email updates and published through a Today at Ƶ story about the storm.

Campus Safety

As a reminder, there are several 24/7 services that remain available throughout the break, no matter the weather:

  • Campus Safety & Police can be reached at 336-278-5555. They can also assist with connections to the Student Life on-call administrators.
  • On-call crisis counselors are available at 336-278-2222.
  • SAFEline is available at 336-278-3333 for confidential support with identity-based bias, sexual violence, or interpersonal violence – they can also be a confidential resource to access on-call violence responders.
  • TimelyCare, a free virtual medical and mental health service, is available 24/7 throughout the break from anywhere in the United States.

Residence Halls and University Apartments (UPDATED 1/26/26 at 2:30 p.m.)

  • Residence halls and university apartments do not close during fake break.
  • Neighborhood offices are closed Monday, January 26, but will be open Tuesday, January 27, from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., and Wednesday, January 28, from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Please use your respective neighborhood on-call phone number for any needs after hours.
  • The Central Residence Life Office will be answering calls Monday, January 26, until 5 p.m. (336-278-7300). They will be open Tuesday, January 27, from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Wednesday, January 28, from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Any early arrivals in residential areas due to weather impacts should be sent to Residence Life at residencelife@elon.edu as soon as possible for case-by-case evaluation.
  • Check-in for new spring semester students participating in New Student Orientation is still scheduled for Tuesday, January 27, from 10 a.m.– 2 p.m. at the neighborhood area offices.

Native American Heritage Month: Discovering identity /u/news/2025/11/25/native-american-heritage-month-discovering-identity/ Tue, 25 Nov 2025 14:06:18 +0000 /u/news/?p=1034036 Tammy Hill grew up in Little Texas in Pleasant Grove Township, a small farming community in Alamance County, North Carolina. She was unfamiliar with the origins of her heritage but aware that the land around her held great significance to her family and neighbors.

“Growing up, my mom would state things like ‘anything you need for healing can be found in the woods’ or share things like the importance of storytelling about family traditions and culture,” said Hill. “But truly, people in our community were just coming to know their Native American heritage, and that’s what’s so special about the Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation.”

Research on nearby graveyards began in the 1980s and continued through the 1990s, leading to the discovery of the Occaneechi’s deep continuous history living on and using the land in the Piedmont of North Carolina into the Virginias. This work resulted in tribal recognition by the state of North Carolina in 2002.

“It’s so important for any person to know who and where they came from,” Hill said. She shared that the Occaneechi were largely wiped out by Europeans in the 1600s and is now the smallest of the officially state-recognized tribes with 1100+ members, according to the North Carolina Department of Administration.

“We were already so well interconnected as a community,” said Hill. “It’s just so important for my family and community to share that connected understanding of who we are and where we come from.”

Hill currently serves as the university’s student health insurance and immunization compliance project manager, located in the Ellington Center for Health & Wellness. She said that her upbringing taught her the value of respectfulness and shaped her into being a connector and nurturer, values she brings to work every day.

Because of this background, Hill believes it is the role of every employee at Ƶ to make the best experience possible for Ƶ parents and students. She said she strives to leave every place she goes better than she found it, whether at work or within the tribal council.

“If student workers leave their experience doing things better than I can, that means I did my job,” said Hill.

Similarly, she wants to see the Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation thrive and will do anything in her power to realize this vision. At age 55, she pursued a degree in American history to deepen her understanding of Western expansion and the many successes of other tribes in the United States.

She also serves as the acting secretary of the Tribal Council and is self-taught in skills needed to manage the OBSN website and web store.

“The OBSN tribe is small but progressive,” said Hill. “There may be just a handful of people doing things, but they certainly do it to their best ability and with the best intentions.”

Hill said that playing a role in any capacity to acknowledge the tribe is important and matters. Hill expressed gratitude for Ƶ that, years ago, hosted a conference for the major tribes of North Carolina. She said that the historical marker placed outside of Schar Hall, as well as the university’s land acknowledgment of the first peoples of Alamance County, is important.

“The people native to this area respect the land and the earth so much. To be acknowledged as the first people here just means everything.”

Parking & Security

  • If you are leaving your vehicle on campus during Thanksgiving Break, please be aware that several events may affect where you park for the week.
    • Students must move vehicles from Global, Schar Center, Ingold, Koury, Inman Ƶ and Barnes lots before 6 a.m. Saturday, November 22, for the home football game. Vehicles left in those lots after that time will be towed.
    • Park in approved alternate lots before returning to permitted spaces by 7 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1.
    • A separate email will be sent on Thursday morning regarding game day parking during Thanksgiving Break.
  • Please make sure your vehicle is locked and you take any valuables with you.
  • Regardless of whether you live on or off campus, make sure you unplug all appliances, move expensive items away from windows, remove spare keys from outside your residence and lock your doors.

Residence Life

  • Residence Halls close on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 10 a.m. and will reopen on Sunday, Nov. 30 at 10 a.m. This applies to residence halls only. University apartments remain open and accessible throughout the break.
  • Information about requests to stay late or return early can be found on the Break Housing page of the Residence Life website. If you will be in a residence hall anytime during the period the halls are closed, you must register in advance.
  • Offices remain open during the break during regular weekday business hours, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., except Thursday and Friday, Nov. 27-28, when university offices are closed.
  • As a reminder, electric scooters/electric transportation devices CANNOT enter any campus buildings. This includes during breaks. Please ensure your electric transportation devices are securely locked outside on a bike rack prior to the break. Any electric transportation devices left inside campus housing/student rooms will be confiscated, and students will be charged a $50 fee.

Dr. Terry Le, Ƶ’s physician and medical director

Dr. Terry Le, previously a physician with the Concentra Urgent Care and Occupational Medicine and floating physician with Novant Family Practice, formally joined the university community on May 1, 2025.

The university physician and medical director serves in partnership between Ƶ and Cone Health-Alamance Regional Medical Center.

In her role, Le provides evaluation and treatment of acute illness, injections, splinting, injuries, preventive care, physical exams and gynecological services for students, faculty and staff. She manages a Student Health Services and Faculty/Staff Health & Wellness Clinic team consisting of five advanced practice providers, one registered nurse, five certified medical assistants, and five support staff.

“I am so excited to be a part of Ƶ’s commitment to nurturing its campus community in its wellness journey,” Le said. “I look forward to caring for the students and campus staff so that we can all thrive and be empowered for life.”

Just like curiosity and learning, wellness is a lifelong process. Wellness is about creating consistent healthy habits for your physical, mental, and social well-being.

Dr. Terry Le, Ƶ physician and medical director

Le previously provided family medicine coverage for Winston-Salem, North Carolina and its surrounding communities as part of Novant Family Practice and Concentra Urgent Care and Occupational Medicine. Her work also involved urgent care and occupational health services for local and global private and government businesses.

Prior to joining Novant and Concentra, Le served as a physician with Eagle Family Medicine, providing outpatient family medicine serves for the Oak Ridge community. She has also worked in urgent medicine and family care within Cone Health and VOHRA Wound Physicians, assessing wounds and providing wound care management.

Le earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California at Berkeley and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her residency in family medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU)-Chesterfield.

Le earned several honors during her medical training that recognize a commitment to wellness, including the Dr. Robert Smith Award for compassionate patient care and the “Hardest Working Woman in Show Business” Award during residency. She also received a scholarship from the American Pain Society and has presented internationally on public health issues, including her research on the assessment of families at risk in rural Tanzania.

Le succeeds longtime physician Dr. Ginette Archinal, who retired in 2024 from Ƶ.

Secure your residence

Whether you live on-campus or off-campus, make sure you secure your room, apartment or house. Other important steps to take before you leave:

  • Make sure all doors and windows are shut and locked
  • Unplug all appliances
  • Hide or relocate valuables and move expensive items away from windows
  • Secure any non-perishable food in airtight containers or cabinets; discard any perishable food from your refrigerator
  • Empty all trash; if you live off campus, secure your trash and recycling containers
  • Check all water faucets to make sure they are completely off
  • Set your thermostat to 50-55 degrees
  • If you have a hidden spare key outside of your off-campus residence, make sure you remove it.

For students in off-campus housing, please remember that your water bill will be due on Dec. 21  and Jan. 21, 2025. Pay online to avoid late charges or having services turned off while you are away.

Throughout the break, there are several 24/7 services available:

  • Campus Safety & Police can be reached at 336-278-5555. They can also assist with connections to the Student Life on-call administrators.
  • Crisis Counselors are available at 336-278-2222 for urgent mental health needs.
  • SAFEline is available at 336-278-3333 for confidential support with identity-based bias, sexual violence, or interpersonal violence – they can also be a confidential resource to access on-call violence responders.
  • TimelyCare free virtual medical and mental health service is available 24/7 throughout the break from anywhere in the United States.

University offices will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 27 and Friday, Nov. 28, for the Thanksgiving Holiday.

Residence Life

  • Residence Halls close on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 10 a.m. and will reopen on Sunday, Dec. 1 at 10 a.m. This applies to residence halls only. University apartments remain open and accessible throughout the break.

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

You may be aware that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently , responding to the . Over the course of the past four years, Ƶ has maintained our commitment to remain adaptive and responsive as conditions evolve. The Infectious Disease Response Team has reviewed the CDC guidance and continues to work with local and state health officials to update university protocols as appropriate.

Dz’s Campus Health Status & Alerts webpage has been updated to reflect a number of shifts in the university response to COVID-19:

  • Under the new CDC guidance, extended isolation following a positive COVID-19 diagnosis is no longer required, however the University recommends following the CDC guidance that anyone who becomes sick with a respiratory virus, including COVID-19, remain at home until 24 hours after: 1) your symptoms are getting better overall; and 2) you have not had a fever and are not using fever-reducing medication. Read the for more about protecting yourself and others if you get sick.
  • In keeping with the CDC’s recommendations, the university will not require an extended period isolation following a positive COVID-19 diagnosis.
  • Continue recommended mitigation strategies to prevent the spread of viruses. Students, faculty and staff should follow measures to reduce the spread of respiratory viruses on campus. The university continues to encourage members of the university community to follow .
  • Symptomatic testing for respiratory viruses will continue to be available on campus. Diagnostic testing for those with symptoms will continue to be available at Student Health Services and the Faculty/Staff Health & Wellness Clinic as part of regular appointments for those seeking evaluation for illness.
  • Sick Leave and Continuity of Work/Instruction policies are available on the Human Resources website. Staff may access available sick leave as indicated in the Staff Manual and the continuity of work policies online. Since the CDC is no longer requiring isolation following a positive COVID-19 diagnosis, the application of these policies may be affected.

Student Health Services

  • Ƶ Student Health Services will continue to be offered in partnership with . The scope of services provided can be found on the . If students need specialist care or medical care beyond the scope of the services offered at Ƶ Student Health Services, the Student Health Services staff can make a referral. Additional information about the Cone Health system can be found on the website.
  • Beginning this fall, Student Health Services will bill student insurance for all visits and services. Any residual costs for the office visit portion of the bill (co-pay, deductibles) are covered by the university. Students should bring their insurance card with them to each visit to Student Health Services. To find more information may be found on the.
  • Any remaining costs associated with the services provided at Student Health Services (outside of the basic office visit) will be the responsibility of the student. Students will be able to access their insurance benefits for these services, but are responsible for all costs not covered by insurance. These costs will be billed to the primary subscriber for the student’s health insurance and can be viewed on the Student Health Services/Cone Health .
  • All students are encouraged to create their Student Health Services MyChart before coming to campus. MyChart will allow students to manage their health care at Student Health Services and to provide enhanced access from any computer or mobile device. Students can schedule appointments, view provider notes and lab results, and communicate with their provider through their Student Health Services/Cone Health MyChart. Students can also designate others to have access to their MyChart.

TimelyCare

  • Students will continue to have full access to services. Ƶ partners with TimelyCare to offer free virtual health and well-being services and programs for students. On-demand medical and mental health support is available 24/7 every day of the year-even during university breaks. TimelyCare gives students access to a licensed provider for their acute medical and mental health needs from anywhere in the United States. On-going care, specialists, and scheduled counseling support are available by scheduling an appointment; some providers are available to meet virtually with students in the evening and on weekends.
  • We recommend that all students set up their TimelyCare account and download the TimelyCare app before coming to campus. If a student already has a TimelyCare account, they do not need to set up a new one – they are all set to continue using services. Instructions for setting up a TimelyCare account can be found .

Pharmacy/Medication Resources

  • If a Student Health Services provider indicates that a student needs a prescription medication, they will review the student’s options for filling the prescription on campus or at the student’s preferred local pharmacy.
  • If the TimelyCare provider indicates that a student needs a prescription, they will send it to a local pharmacy. A list of local pharmacy resources can be found . Note pharmacies that are on the transportation line. Some pharmacies will also deliver to campus through a delivery service (SHIPT, Instacart, private courier, etc.). We encourage them to set up an account at their preferred pharmacy before coming to campus.
  • Fountain Market in Clohan Hall stocks basic over-the-counter medications and medical supplies for purchase. Students are encouraged to bring medical supplies (first aid kit, thermometer, etc.) and over-the-counter medications (fever reducer, stomach upset medications, pain relievers, allergy medications, etc.) with them when they come to campus.

The university is launching a new health insurance plan available to full-time undergraduate and graduate students and is also introducing a new model for on-site student health services that will allow Student Health Services to directly bill insurance for services students now pay for out-of-pocket and offer other benefits. Taken together, these important changes will ensure that effective medical care remains at the forefront of our support for student health and wellness.

Launch of new student health insurance plan

Ƶ has had a long-standing health insurance requirement for all full-time undergraduate, graduate, and law students. The university has partnered with Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina to offer a student health insurance plan to assist students in meeting that requirement. Details on the plan can be found on the .

As they prepare for the fall semester, all returning students will either need to verify their existing health insurance coverage (for example, coverage through a parent/family member’s insurance plan) or enroll in the new student health insurance plan this spring. The new student plan will replace the existing required health insurance plan for international students, and will also be available as an elective plan for full-time students with existing plans that do not offer sufficient out-of-network coverage in North Carolina.

All returning students must complete their student health insurance verification or enroll in the new plan by Friday, March 17 – before registering for fall classes. Students should to either upload a waiver request with documentation of existing health insurance coverage or enroll in the new student health insurance plan.

  • For returning students with existing health insurance: Visit the and follow the instructions on the “Waive” tab to upload your current health insurance information, including an image of your health insurance card.
  • For returning students who do not currently have insurance: If you need insurance coverage in order to meet the university’s health insurance requirement, visit the and follow the instructions on the “Enroll” tab to enroll in the plan for the fall.
  • For returning international students: If you are currently enrolled in the university-required international student health insurance plan, the new Student Blue plan from Blue Cross Blue Shield will replace that plan. Visit the and follow the instructions on the “Enroll” tab to enroll in the plan for the fall.
  • For students who will be studying abroad in the fall: While traveling abroad you will be enrolled in an international health insurance plan, as described on the Global Education Center website. Although you are not required to demonstrate health insurance coverage in the United States at this time, if you have existing health insurance, you may consider visiting the and following the instructions on the “Waive” tab now, so you will have one less action step to take in the fall when trying to register for spring classes.
  • For students who are graduating before fall semester or who will be part-time in the fall: No action is needed at this time. However, should your status for fall semester change from part-time to full- time, you will be expected to meet the university’s health insurance requirement.

New model for on-site student health services

The university has renewed its partnership with Cone Health as the provider for on-site Student Health Services in the Ellington Center.

Starting Aug. 1, the university will implement a new financial model to enhance services and ensure the university is able to provide the best possible medical care through standard office visits on campus.

Some key features of the change:

  • When accessing Student Health Services for a routine office visit, there will continue to be no charge to students – they will present their insurance card and services will be billed through their insurance provider. Co-pays and deductibles for these services will be covered by the university through the Student Health Fee.
  • Starting Aug. 1, Student Health Services will directly bill insurance for those services that students currently pay for out-of-pocket – such as lab expenses/tests, procedures, medications, and services of a specialist. Students will only be billed for co-pays or deductibles. The university anticipates increased access to psychiatric services and other specialists.
  • Medical records will be maintained in MyChart, powered by Epic, starting Aug. 1, which will increase the portability of those records to at-home providers.
    The chart below provides information about how the changes to the financial model for Student Health Services will affect any charges or billing processes. These changes do not impact billing practices for off-campus providers.

These new changes with student health insurance and Student Health Services are happening in addition to the significant investment the university made last summer to expand virtual medical and mental health care through TimelyCare virtual services, which offer 24/7 access to on-demand or scheduled medical and mental health services, as well as health coaching and peer support.
