Emily Delaplane figured a video she created for her fall semester global experience course was just for a grade. When her relatives forwarded a link to her YouTube project to colleagues and friends, the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ freshman found herself with more than an “A” – and Delaware’s Office of the Child Advocate couldn’t be happier.

An organization that represents private colleges and universities in North Carolina has awarded ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ a grant of $20,000 to fund programs for rising first-year college students in the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Academy, the Watson Scholarship Program and the Odyssey Scholarship Program.

About 50 students, faculty, staff and local community members gathered Jan. 16 for the Beloved Community Peace Journey and Candlelight Vigil, an annual event that includes a march around campus.

Understanding the relations that unite us and tearing down the barriers that separate us is crucial to maintaining Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream of equality in America. That was the message Ronald L. Carter, president of Johnson C. Smith University, told those gathered at Whitley Auditorium Jan. 13 as part of ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Program.

The Multicultural Center will host its annual celebration of the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a series of events that run Jan. 11-17, 2011. The events commemorate the spirit of diversity and honor the sacrifices and current work of many for inclusion and equality.

The Alamance Foundation recently presented a $2,200 gift to the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Academy to be used to support college visits for more than 75 ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Academy scholars during the summer of 2011.

Several ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ students have been awarded prestigious scholarships for their upcoming spring 2011 semester study abroad programs.
