Seventeen members and guests of the School of Communications Advisory Board met online on Sept. 15 to discuss their professional industries, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and how the school can better educate and prepare students.

The networking initiative welcomed prospective students and hosted a discussion about Beyoncé’s new movie, “Black Is King,” examining the impact of representation in the media industry.

This year, new and returning Communications Fellows traded their usual ice cream social for Zoom and trivia. Nevertheless, the Aug. 27 event allowed first-year Fellows to connect virtually with upperclassmen and hear about their experiences in the Fellows program.

The class of 2024 consists of 35 students across the School of Communications’ six undergraduate majors.

The lecturer in cinema and television arts served as the directory of photography on Vox’s recent project highlighting water pollution in the Tar Heel state.

The professorships support members of the faculty from a variety of disciplines across the university.

During the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication’s 2020 national convention – held virtually for the first time in 103 years – 13 School of Communications faculty members presented research, shared professional experiences and directed topical discussions.

There is still time to RSVP for the School of Communications’ upcoming half-hour Zoom events highlighting internships, student media, school organizations and the ������Ƶ in Los Angeles program.

The ������Ƶ graduate was presented with the Emma Bowen Foundation’s Outstanding Student of the Year Award, and will appear in the upcoming “Family of Us: A PBS American Portrait Story” series.

This summer nine School of Communications students are interning virtually at RadicalMedia, working on PBS’s American Portrait project.
