Faculty and students from the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Biology Department attended the annual meeting of the North Carolina Academy of Science at Warren Wilson College in Asheville, N.C. on April 3-4. Faculty members Yuko Miyamoto, Michael Kingston, Jeffrey Coker and Linda Niedziela accompanied students Brian Beaty, Daniel Brown and Philip Zakas. The students presented their undergraduate research during the two day meeting.

Mike Kingston, an associate professor of biology, was interviewed by the La Jolla Village News in San Diego, Calif., on the phenomenon of green beaches in southern California.

An $84,000 grant from the North Carolina Biotechnology Center is helping ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ purchase state-of-the-art equipment for processing DNA samples, a move that will accelerate and expand faculty and undergraduate science research that, until now, has relied on outside companies for processing.

Nancy Knowlton, a renowned expert on coral reefs, visits ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ this month as the 2008-2009 Voices of Discovery series continues with a talk on the impact of climate change on the planet's reef systems. Knowlton's lecture on Feb. 18 is free and open to the public starting at 7:30 p.m. in McCrary Theatre.

Brant Touchette, an associate professor of biology and environmental studies, was featured in a recent publication of Coastwatch. The article, "Research Grows Future Scientists," shows Touchette and his students in their study of the Black Needlerush, a species found in coastal estuaries and marshes.

ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ senior Sarah Babcock received the third annual North Carolina Campus Compact Community Impact Student Award during the organization’s Nov. 8 conference at High Point University in High Point, N.C.
