DNA equipment boosts undergraduate research

An $84,000 grant from the North Carolina Biotechnology Center is helping ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ purchase state-of-the-art equipment for processing DNA samples, a move that will accelerate and expand faculty and undergraduate science research that, until now, has relied on outside companies for processing.

Larissa Ferretti, a senior Honors Fellow and psychology major, will share her research this spring with lawmakers in Washington about the effects of parental involvement in teaching math and number skills to young children. The May presentation is part of a highly selective program that features leading undergraduate research from around the nation.

POWERless Energy Competition under way

The POWERless Energy Competition returned to ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ this semester for a seven-week contest to see which residence halls can best reduce their electricity usage. The competition began Feb. 17 with a kick-off event at College Coffee.

The Corporation for National & Community Service named the university this week to the 2008 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll With Distinction for exemplary service efforts to America's communities.

ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ community donates textbooks for Ghana school

More than 3,000 books were collected this fall in a textbook drive organized by history professor Brian Digre. Digre delivered the books, packed into 120 boxes bound for the University of Cape Coast in Ghana, on Dec. 19 to a U.S. Naval base for transport to the African nation.

Students help viewers following state DTV tests

North Carolina television viewers flooded the School of Communications with phone calls Thursday as ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ students manned a call center to answer questions about a nationwide conversion to digital television. Regional stations alerted viewers to the DTV change on Feb. 17, 2009, with two “soft tests” that interrupted regular programming for people who rely on antennas to get reception.

Students break the ice of Lake Mary Nell in Polar Bear Plunge

Just one day after the first significant snowfall of the year, dozens of students on Jan. 21 braved the ice and frigid waters of Lake Mary Nell for the 2009 Polar Bear Plunge. The sixth annual event, which featured gift card prizes to local retail merchants and restaurants, doubled as a fundraiser for the World Wildlife Fund.
