Janet MacFall, chair of the Department of Environmental Studies, has been recognized with the J.W. Pate Award by the Cape Fear River Assembly.  

This organization represents many interests within the Cape Fear River Basin, the largest river basin in  North Carolina. Members include local and state governments, environmental organizations, councils of government, industries and individuals. Its mission is to provide information and representation to a diverse group of stakeholders within the river basin, with the goal of stewardship of the water resources for the communities depending on them.

The award was presented at the annual meeting of the Cape Fear River Assembly membership in Fayetteville, N.C. It recognized MacFall, a professor of environmental studies and biology, “for her outstanding contribution toward creating environmental awareness among the citizens of North Carolina.”

Janet MacFall, professor of environmental studies and biology​, will be recognized with the Conservation Communicator Award from the Hugh Bennett Chapter of the national Soil and Water Conservation Society at the chapter’s awards banquet on Feb. 25. 

The chapter, which represents North Carolina, presents the award to an individual who has demonstrated an outstanding effort to widely communicate the conservation goals of the society. These goals are reflected in a quote from Hugh Hammond Bennett, the founding leader of the Soil and Water Conservation Service, now the U.S.D.A. Natural Resource Conservation Service. In the quote, Bennett states, “From every conceivable angle – economic, social, cultural, public health, national defense – conservation of natural resources is an objective on which all should agree.”  

Bennett was born and raised in North Carolina, and is a part of a long-time tradition of conservation tradition in this state.

The river has been named as the 9th most-threatened river in the United States and her research describes the change in shape and processes regulating erosion of the river banks of this major river system.

Students recognized for conservation efforts /u/news/2013/10/08/students-recognized-for-conservation-efforts/ Tue, 08 Oct 2013 18:00:00 +0000 /u/news/2013/10/08/students-recognized-for-conservation-efforts/ The North Carolina Association of Soil and Water Districts honors a N.C. farm each year for their environmental stewardship and conservation practices. This year’s honoree was The Jane Iseley Farm of Burlington, N.C.

During a celebration featuring Gov. Pat McCrory, N.C. Commissioner of Agriculture Steve Troxler and state legislators Steve Ross, Rick Gunn and Dennis  Riddell, ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ students in Instructor Gerry Dorsett’s Environmental Studies class in Community Agriculture were recognized and thanked for their help in farm production, including preparations for the event. Students assisted with field preparation, harvest, production and event setup.

Jane Iseley’s farming practices provide a model for sustainable, locally based farming. Crops include strawberries, vegetables, beef and organic tobacco. The farm has been in the Iseley family since the 1700s and is recognized as a Century Farm by the state of North Carolina.

ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ hosts regional Envirothon competition /u/news/2013/03/25/elon-hosts-regional-envirothon-competition-2/ Mon, 25 Mar 2013 18:14:00 +0000 /u/news/2013/03/25/elon-hosts-regional-envirothon-competition-2/ On Monday, March 25, nearly 300 students visited the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ campus. In the morning, they participated in workshops on environmental topics, including soils, water, wildlife, forestry and current environmental issues. 

In the afternoon, students competed in contests where they demonstrated knowledge in each of the topic areas. Contests took the format of written tests completed as 4 person teams. Student teams came from 11 surrounding counties. Winners of today’s competition are eligible to compete in the state championship.  Winners from North Carolina will they travel to the National Championship this summer.

Student teams often spend years in preparation for this event, and are very successful in demonstrating a high level of knowledge about the environment and ecology.

Water Conservation through Reuse – Drivers and Impediments – March 6 /u/news/2012/03/02/water-conservation-through-reuse-drivers-and-impediments-march-6/ Fri, 02 Mar 2012 13:12:00 +0000 /u/news/2012/03/02/water-conservation-through-reuse-drivers-and-impediments-march-6/ The American Waterworks Association and the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ Center for Environmental Studies are holding a March 6 daylong conference on water conservation through water recycling and reuse. The purpose of the conference is to investigate various drivers and impediments for water reuse in North Carolina and learn more about innovative water reuse programs in the public and private sectors. Water resource experts from the region as well as ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ staff will be presenting novel ideas for water conservation through reuse. 

ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ faculty and students are invited to participate.

More than 3,000 participants attended the conference.

MacFall also attended the meeting for the Board of Professional Certificatin for the society. She is an elected member to this Board.
