New advanced level elective course /u/news/2010/11/09/new-advanced-level-elective-course/ Tue, 09 Nov 2010 14:08:00 +0000 /u/news/2010/11/09/new-advanced-level-elective-course/ I would like to suggest a new course in dance that I am offering in the spring as an appropriate dance elective for dance majors, as well as an upper division outside of the major for all others. The course is DAN 320 C: DANCE CRITICISM and it meets from 10:30 to 12:10 on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

DESCRIPTION–DAN 320C DANCE CRITICISM: This course will explore current theories, materials and methods considered in writing dance criticism and examine both the aesthetic and theoretical aspects of a dance work in order to prompt writing from either viewpoint. Methods will include group study, choreographic evaluation, application of research, and individual writing projects related to critical writing about dance.

Email me at lsabo@elon.edu if you’d like more information.

It analyzes two Busby Berkeley spectacles from the film Gold Diggers of 1933 to better understand that musical’s negotiation of contradictory writing and performance styles not just to entertain, but to address sociocultural issues of its time as well as suggest Utopian visions of a better future.

Dance Salon on Friday, Oct. 19 /u/news/2007/10/17/dance-salon-on-friday-oct-19/ Wed, 17 Oct 2007 20:35:00 +0000 /u/news/2007/10/17/dance-salon-on-friday-oct-19/ The Performing Arts Department is presenting our second new dance event this fall this coming Friday evening in Dance Studio A in the Center for the Arts  We call this event the Dance Salon, using “salon” in the sense of a gathering or meeting, much like the French salon or soirée where people gathered informally to see and discuss some type of artistic showing or event. This fall we will have two separate shows, one at 6:00 and one at 8:00, each with a different program. These are mostly all short works in progress from Lauren Kearns’ choreography class. The choreographers are just beginning and would like to have some feedback on their dances.

Dance scholar Dr. Larry Lavender from UNCG Dance Department will moderate the 6:00 program and ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ professor Linda Sabo will lead the 8:00 program discussion.  Please take a look at the list of choreographers.  You may know or have taken class with some of these young artists.  They are eager for your feedback.

Here they are!

6:00 Program:  Annie McGhee, Autumn Welt, Marissa Heitshusen, Rachel Teem, Michelle Micca, Allie Lochary, Elizabeth Easterly, Kristen Owens, Karena Thacker.

8:00 Program:  Rachel Pearlman, Amber Smith, Elizabeth McBride, Danielle Ransdell, Elise Porter, Jessica Wockenfuss, Cathy Liu, Kasey Waters.

Again we’re in the Center for the Arts, Dance Studio A.  Turn left after the box office, go through the double doors and down the hallway to the very end. Admission is free.  Seating is first come, first serve, but all seats should be good seats.  Hope to see you there!

“A Day in Hollywood, A Night in the Ukraine” at McCrary Theatre /u/news/2007/02/09/a-day-in-hollywood-a-night-in-the-ukraine-at-mccrary-theatre/ Fri, 09 Feb 2007 14:16:00 +0000 /u/news/2007/02/09/a-day-in-hollywood-a-night-in-the-ukraine-at-mccrary-theatre/ A photo from a day in hollywoodA fun time is in store for you this weekend if you like great singing and dancing and zany comedy. An “old-fashioned” musical comedy with lots of gags, gals and great songs can describe the 1980 Tony award winning “A Day in Hollywood, A Night in the Ukraine,” which opened last night at McCrary Theatre.

An ingeniously constructed “musical double feature” tribute to Hollywood’s heyday, Act One’s “A Day In Hollywood” is set in the lobby of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre where a group of singing and tapping ushers pay homage to those marvelous 1930s films. Act Two’s “A Night in the Ukraine” is a zany parody of Chekov’s The Bear — as performed by the Marx Brothers!

Dick Vosburgh’s and Frank Lazarus’ original score with additional new music by Jerry Herman, is complemented by popular songs from the era like “Just Too Marvelous,” “Easy to Love,” and “Ain’t We Got Fun.” You’ll laugh a lot, for sure, and delight in the nostalgic songs and dances from this magnificent time in Hollywood history! Come and be entertained by ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ’s Performing Arts Department in this sweet remembrance of the early days of the film industry
