ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Academy College Planning Team: Jenni Johnson, John Pickett, Princess King
The ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Academy College Planning team ventured to the Southern Association for College ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Counselors annual conference in Miami, FL April 9- April 13.  The team presented on challenges and success in supporting underrepsented students.  In a session entitled “Sealing the Deal, Supporting Underrepresented Students in Accessing College,” John Pickett, Jennifer Johnson, and Princess King shared successes, challenges, and resources experienced by the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Academy over the previous 10 years.  This session allowed attendees to share common experiences and resources in successfully supporting this population, and was attended by admissions professionals, individuals from community based organizations, as well as collaborating higher education advocates.

The Near-Peer Mentoring College Challenge is a White House sponsored challenge that encourages colleges throughout the nation to reach out to their local high schools and help guide students to a higher education. 

The way to win the challenge is to share how your college or university is dedicated to promoting a higher education for the community through social media (i.e. YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) with the hashtag #ReachHigher. The more 

shares it gets, the more likely it is to win! The college or university with the best video submission has the honor to have Michelle Obama speak at their next spring commencement ceremony.

For this challenge, ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ decided to focus on The Center for Access and Success.  The Center reaches out to the community through the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Academy, the Watson/Odyssey Scholars Program, Collegiate Start @ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ, and the It Takes a Village Project. These different programs are dedicated towards helping traditionally underrepresented students succeed in school starting at the pre-K level and into higher education. More information about each program can be found at: .

On Tuesday, December 2, 2014 we invite you to participate in #GivingTuesday. This is an opportunity to give an online donation to support the work of the causes you care about in Alamance County. 

The project started nationally in 2012 and a group of volunteers have brought #GivingTuesday to Alamance County in 2014. There is real excitement in this spirit of collaboration as nonprofits, local governments, businesses and organizations join hands to create a culture of generosity on #GivingTuesday.
