.

More than 320,000 students have experienced gun violence at school since Columbine. The tragic attacks in Uvalde, Texas, Newtown, Connecticut, Parkland, Florida, and other places have raised concerns among many people across the nation. Such shootings have become more frequent and more deadly in the last decade. Each mass murder has devastating effects on a whole community.

Overall, the United States has become safer in recent years, yet mass shooters target innocent people indiscriminately — often in places where people should feel safe such as movie theaters, shopping centers, and schools. How can we stop mass shootings and ensure that people feel safe in their homes and communities?

A Deliberative Dialogue is an opportunity for students to gather and exchange diverse views and experiences to seek a shared understanding of a challenge facing our society and to search for common ground for action.

This event is limited to the first 70 students who register and .

Active Citizen Series to host ‘Deliberative Dialogue’ event on policing /u/news/2022/07/11/active-citizen-series-to-host-deliberative-dialogue-event-on-policing/ Mon, 11 Jul 2022 19:15:45 +0000 /u/news/?p=919050 Ƶ students, faculty and staff are invited to take part in the first Deliberative Dialogue event of the academic year on Monday, Sept. 26 at 4:30 p.m. in Lakeside 212.

In communities across the United States, people are rethinking police practices. The goal is to treat all people fairly while still enforcing the law. All Americans want to feel safe, both from crime and police misconduct. While the overall crime rate continues to decline, in 2020 alone FBI data showed a 30% increase in murders, and gun violence took nearly 20,000 American lives – the most in more than 20 years. Although federal, state, and local lawmakers have taken some steps to review policing policies and reform police departments, crucial decisions still have to be made. Making these decisions will require sustained focus and the involvement of community members, policymakers and law enforcement professionals.

A Deliberative Dialogue is an opportunity for students, faculty, staff and community members to gather and exchange diverse views and experiences to seek a shared understanding of a challenge facing our society and to search for common ground for action.

The pandemic swiftly brought the nation’s economy to a near standstill in 2020. Just as an earthquake reveals flaws in a building, the pandemic and the shutdown brought to light hidden truths in our economy – How tenuously many small businesses cling to survival; how many of the people doing essential jobs are women and people of color; and how much the country relies on other nations for vital products and services. Moving forward, what changes should be made in the way we live and work?

A Deliberative Dialogue is an opportunity for students to gather and exchange diverse views and experiences to seek a shared understanding of a challenge facing our society and to search for common ground for action.
