The Phoenix men's cross country team took first and the women's team took second in the inaugural ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Invitational cross country meet held Sept. 12 on the new course developed on South Campus. The men's race covered 8 kilometers and the women's race was on a 5K course. The race was a chance for ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ athletics to tune up for the Southern Conference championship meet, which will be hosted by ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Oct. 31.

Heading for Homecoming 2009 (Oct. 23-25), ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ’s Alumni Board was on campus Sept. 17-18 for its fall meeting. Attendees focused on planning for an expanded homecoming program and discussed next steps in efforts as diverse as the use of social media and ways to increase alumni financial support through the Ever ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Campaign.

A program directed by ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ School of Communications 2002 graduate Audrey Seagraves has received a prestigious international technology award. The online "Fair Wage Guide," managed by Seagraves, is a tool to assist millions of workers in the developing world who live below the poverty level.

Susan Wise, coordinator of disabilities services, attended the Association on Higher Education and Disability national conference.

Troy Martin, associate director of academic advising, utilized a staff sabbatical and a summer research grant from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro to examine educational practice in the developing democratic nations of South Africa and Uganda during July, 2009.

A special Web site has been created as a clearinghouse for information regarding ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ's response to the H1N1 flu. Go to for information about how to protect yourself from the flu virus, and to find out how to respond if you, your roommate, friends or family members get sick.

BusinessWeek featured ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ's efforts to reach out to students' families as part of its Career Services programs. The magazine says, " ... It's hard to find a school that has more seamlessly capitalized on friends and family networks than ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ in North Carolina..."

ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ is one of 25 colleges and universities highlighted in the 2010 edition of the Newsweek-Kaplan college guide. This is ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ's second appearance in the guide; in 2006 Newsweek-Kaplan named ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ the nation's "hottest college" for engaged learning.

Andrea Dorrow, an economics and business major and one of the inaugural Lumen Scholars, was featured in the annual report of the Beit CURE International Hospital in Malawi. As part of her Lumen Scholar research, Dorrow spent time in the southeast African country studying the role that minimal healthcare plays in determining the economic health of a developing nation.
