The MBA Student Alumni Association hosted an October golf tournament that raised $1,000 in support of the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Academy Dream Fund, a special budget created by the association last year to assist ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Academy with college visits, involve students in school and community projects, and help students and families when unexpected life situations arise.
MBA program leaders and alumni presented a check Dec. 6 to the scholars, families, and staff at the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Academy’s holiday luncheon. Presenters were: Bill Burpitt, associate professor of business and director of the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ MBA and executive education programs; Karl Sherrill, an alumnus of the MBA program; and Judy Dulberg, MBA program coordinator.
The ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Academy is a college-access program for Alamance-Burlington School System students. The three-year program includes a month-long summer residential experiences on the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ campus and monthly sessions during the academic year. The current 50 students will continue with the program until graduation.
A third cohort of 26 students is being recruited. The program will reach full capacity – about 75 students – in 2009.
The mission of the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Academy is to inspire academically oriented students who are often underrepresented on college and university campuses to pursue higher education, build leadership skills and develop an active sense of social responsibility.
Eligible students must have a desire to succeed, be willing to commit to the three-year program, demonstrate academic promise, have no history of disciplinary problems, and demonstrate financial need or have no family history of college attendance.
