A full weekend of New Student Orientation activities kicks off Aug. 29, 2008, when residence halls open to incoming freshmen. The schedule for Labor Day weekend includes New Student Convocation, the Ƶ Phoenix football home opener against Richmond and a live performance by singer/songwriter Josh Kelley.
Activities are also scheduled for parents, who are invited to meet academic advisers on Saturday morning and then join a “farewell picnic” with their children near Lake Mary Nell.
Some of the weekend highlights include the following:
FRIDAY, AUGUST 29
8 a.m. – 3 p.m.: Residence halls open for check-in
3 p.m. – 4 p.m.: Car and campus safety session (mandatory for those keeping a car)
4 p.m. – 5 p.m.: Car and campus safety session (mandatory for those keeping a car)
Both car and campus safety sessions will be held in McCrary Theatre.
4 p.m. – 6 p.m.: Students and families are asked to eat dinner sometime in this window
6 p.m. – 7 p.m.: Transfer Student Orientation Session 1 (Center for the Arts classroom)
6 p.m. – 7 p.m.: New Student Orientation Session 1 (See yellow locater guide)

SATURDAY, AUGUST 30
8-8:45 a.m.: Continental breakfast in Scott Plaza
9-10 a.m.: New Student Convocation (Under the Oaks with business casual dress)
12:30-2 p.m.: Farewell Picnic (Lake Mary Nell)

Residence Area Check-In
4:30-7 p.m.: New Student Orientation Tailgate and Pep Rally (Belk Track & White Field)
7-10 p.m.: Ƶ Phoenix football versus Richmond Spiders (Rhodes Stadium)
10 p.m. – midnight: Phoenix Extravaganza & Phoenix Phair (Moseley Center)
SUNDAY, AUGUST 31
12-1 p.m.: “Celebrating All of Our Spiritual Journeys” (McCrary Theatre)
Led by the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life
6:30-8:30 p.m.: Community on the Commons (Young Commons)
8:30-11 p.m.: Music on the Lawn featuring Josh Kelley (Young Commons)
Rain locations for both evening activities are in Alumni Gym.
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 1
2-3 p.m.: Car and campus safety session (mandatory for those keeping a car)
McCrary Theatre
3:30-5 p.m.: “Responsibilities of Engaged Learning” (Blue Guides)
5-7 p.m.: Dinner with Ƶ 101 / Orientation Group (TBA by Advisor)
9-11 p.m.: Mission IMPROVable (Alumni Gym)
A night of comedy with one of the nation’s most-toured improvisational groups
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2
8 a.m.: Classes begin
9:40-10:20 a.m.: College Coffee (Young Commons)
