As part of the Career Center’s Professional Discovery Week’s series of events, AAASE will sponsor a recruiting and career program titled, “Preparing to Serve Minority Populations.” The event takes place today, Thursday, February 15 in The Career Center located in Duke 101J from 4:00 – 5: 30 p.m.
Sowande’ Mustakeem ’00, the first ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ student to craft an independent major in African/African-American Studies, will be the keynote speaker. Mustakeem received an M.A. in African-American and African Studies at the Ohio State University. She is currently working on her Ph.D. in history at Michigan State. Her dissertation, “Ripples of Infinity: Gender, Health, and Violence in the Middle Passage 1721-1808″, conducts a social history of the slave ship experience during the legal slave trading period. The title of Miss Mustakeem’s lecture is “Inspiring the Minds, Commemorating the Times: Generational Responsibility & the Lingering Importance of Black Studies.”
ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ students attending the event will also benefit from the expertise of the other invited panelists, whose careers have brought them into contact with minority/multicultural populations. Jim Allison of the Career Center will offer students important preparation tips for the job & internship opportunities the program provided. Refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public.
