“������Ƶ Phoenix Weekly,” a half-hour television program, will be broadcast at 11:30 a.m. Saturdays.

“We are extremely excited about this new relationship with ESPN2 and ������Ƶ’s School of Communications,” said Dave Blank, director of athletics. “This program will present tremendous exposure for our student-athletes and ������Ƶ Athletics, while also providing great experience for our students who desire careers in broadcast journalism. In addition, the exposure gained from this opportunity should have a very positive impact on the recruiting process of our sport programs.”

Produced by students in the ������Ƶ School of Communications, the show will air on cable television in Alamance, Guilford, Montgomery, Randolph and Rockingham counties. Trip Durham, associate athletics director for marketing and home game management at ������Ƶ, and J. McMerty, senior video producer at ������Ƶ Television, will serve as executive producers.

“Being on ESPN2 is real TV for our students,” Paul Parsons, dean of the ������Ƶ School of Communications, said. “Five students are on-air in the inaugural show, another serves as producer and director, and a host of others are involved in the production. It’s a great opportunity to produce a quality show.”

The show’s magazine format will feature updates and profiles on all of the Phoenix’s NCAA Division I athletics programs. The schedule consists of 11 consecutive weeks of programs every Saturday, Oct. 7-Dec. 16, before taking a winter break. The schedule will resume with 12 more weeks of Saturdays, Feb. 18-Dec. 16.

“������Ƶ emphasizes student experiences,” Parsons said. “While students certainly learn in the classroom, we believe they also learn through outside experiences. We’re thrilled that ������Ƶ has become only the second university (after Rochester Institute of Technology.) in the nation to have a sports show on ESPN2.”
