Baseball team earns first top 25 ranking

The Phoenix baseball team is ranked 25th nationally in the latest Baseball America poll, released May 22, marking the first time ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ has been ranked in the top 25 since moving to the NCAA Division I level in 1999. Details...

With a 42-14 record, ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ has won 20 of its last 23 games and clinched the Southern Conference regular season title last weekend with two wins over UNC Greensboro. The Phoenix will open play in the Southern Conference tournament May 24 in Charleston, SC, against the winner of a first round game between Appalachian State and Davidson. Rice (46-10) sits atop the poll. The Phoenix has squared off with two other teams in the Baseball America top-25 this year – #3 Clemson and #4 North Carolina. San Francisco (37-19) is also making its first-ever appearance in the poll and sits just ahead of ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ at #24.

The Phoenix is also among teams receiving votes in this week’s Sports Weekly/ESPN Coaches Poll and moved up from 29th to 27th in the latest edition of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll.

The baseball program becomes just the second ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ team to move into a national top-25 poll at the NCAA Division I level. The ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ football squad achieved a ranking of 16th in 1999.
