Senior Katie Donovan plans to use the one-year Ambassadorial Scholarship from the Rotary Foundation to study in England. Donovan plans to study in England at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, where she will pursue a master’s degree in cross cultural communications and media studies. The scholarship, with awards ranging from $14,000 to $26,000, will cover round-trip transportation, courses, room, board and some educational supplies.
The scholarship requires Donovan to present information about the U.S. to Rotary Clubs in England. “My main mission while I am there is to promote peace, understanding, and goodwill and through these presentations,” Donovan says, “I hope to make friendships that will last and that can promote international service projects between the U.S. and England.
Donovan has had a distinguished career at ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ. As a communications major, she is heavily involved with ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Television and ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Student Television, Phoenix Weekly, Win Stuff, Phoenix 14 News and several other programs. She has interned at Discovery Communications, the Motion Picture Association and the Chris Craft Corporation.
Donovan is also involved in the Isabella Cannon Leadership Program. She spent a semester abroad in Italy and encourages all ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ students to study abroad. “I think there is no other experience quite like living and learning abroad. To live and learn within a different culture is such an eye-opening experience and one that will benefit me when I start a career in the U.S.,” she says.
To be eligible from the Ambassadorial Scholarship, students must have completed two years of university or college course work and be a citizen in a country where the Rotary Club currently operates.
The Rotary Club’s purpose is to promote international understanding and world peace. The Rotary Foundation’s Ambassadorial Scholarship supports approximately 1,100 students annually, and has supported nearly 37,000 throughout its history.
