Gerald Whittington, vice president for business, finance and technology at ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ, has announced the promotion of Vickie Somers to director of auxiliary enterprises. Somers has been a member of the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ staff since 1975.

Whittington says Somers “has been an extremely valuable member of the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ community and a contributor to the success of the institution for many years. It is a pleasure to have her assume these important new responsibilities.”

Somers will have responsibility for the operation of several key functions at ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ, including the print shop, bookstore, mail services, food service, vending and trademarks and licensing. She became director of purchasing at ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ after serving as a purchasing manager and purchasing agent.

Somers has served on the national board of directors of the National Association of Educational Buyers (NAEB), and has served as president and treasurer of the association’s Carolinas region.

Under her leadership, ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ earned a “Best In Class” award from the NAEB in a 1997 survey designed to measure exemplary purchasing service. ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ was one of only 10 schools to receive the association’s top service designation.

“I appreciate the opportunity to learn about different facets of ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ after serving the purchasing profession,” says Somers. “I look forward to the new challenges that lie ahead.”

Somers received an associate’s degree from Rockingham Community College before earning her bachelor’s degree from ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ.
