The northernmost of three football practice fields in the North athletics complex was named for George Tucker, Ƶ’s head football coach from 1960-64, during a special ceremony Saturday, Sept. 7. A gift from friends and former players, Tucker Field is a tribute to Tucker’s coaching career and the influence he had on his players.

Athletics Director Alan White, President Leo M. Lambert and Ƶ alumnus Dan Kelley presided with Tucker at the dedication.

During his time as coach, Tucker compiled a record of 29 wins, 20 losses and one tie. In 1964, his team went 8-1-1 and produced Ƶ’s first outright conference championship in more than 20 years.

Tucker was inducted into the Ƶ Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. He lives in Columbia, S.C., with his wife, Becky.
