An ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ practice football field will be dedicated to a former coach and ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Sports Hall of Fame member at 6 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 7.
The northernmost of three football practice fields in the North athletics complex is being named for George Tucker, ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ’s head football coach from 1960-64. A gift from friends and former players, Tucker Field is a tribute to Tucker’s coaching career and the influence he had on his players.
Athletics Director Alan White, President Leo M. Lambert and ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ alumnus Dan Kelley will preside with Tucker at the dedication Saturday.
During his time as coach, Tucker compiled a record of 29 wins, 20 losses and one tie. In 1964, his team went 8-1-1 and produced ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ’s first outright conference championship in more than 20 years.
Tucker was inducted into the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. He lives in Columbia, S.C., with his wife, Becky.
